It was "His & Hers" district titles for the Vikings and Lady Vikings of Cass Midway High School as both purple squads protected their "house" at the MSHSAA Class 1 District 3 track & field meet, Saturday, May 9, at Cass Midway.
The top four place finishers in individual events and relays from the district meet advanced to the sectional meet this Saturday, May 16 at John F. Kennedy Stadium in Springfield. Midway will be taking a bus full.
The Lady Vikings crushed the fourteen team field with 160 points. Jasper was a distant second with 95 points, and Liberal was third with 93 points.
Midway took the boys' team title with 127.33 points. Jasper was second with 116 points, and Appleton City placed third with 106 points. Fifteen teams competed in the boys' division.
Shelby Garrigus was a double gold medal winner for the Lady Vikes. Shelby won the district triple jump title with a mark of 32' 10 ½", and she claimed the district long jump title with a mark of 14' 10".
Shannon Carver was the girls' shot put champion with a mark of 32' 6 ¾".
Zach Goddard was the boys' triple jump district champion with a mark of 39' 9 ¼".
The Vikings' 4x200 meter relay team of Justin Beshore, Sam Riggs, Zach Goddard, and Clint Hayes ran a first place time of 1:37.6.
Hannah Mills was second in three events. Hannah was second in the girls' high jump clearing 4' 9". Hannah was second in the triple jump with a mark of 30' 2", and she was second in the 400 meter dash in a time of 1:05.2.
Shannon Carver placed second in the girls' pole vault by clearing 9' 0". Mackenzie Weis was second in the 1600 meter run in a time of 5:44.3, and Mackenzie was second in the 3200 meter run in a time of 12:17.2. Kayla Robinson ran a second place time of 2:36.8 in the 800 meter run.
The Lady Vikes' 4x800 meter relay team of Kelsey Weis, Mackenzie Weis, Josie Riggs, and Kayla Robinson ran a second place time of 10:38.0. The 4x100 meter relay team of Bree Renner, Shannon Carver, Lesli Wright, and Shelby Garrigus ran a second place time of 56.0 seconds.
Justin Beshore ran a second place time of 17.0 in the boys' 110 meter high hurdles, and Justin was second in the 300 meter intermediate hurdles in a time of 42.5 seconds.
Sam Riggs was second in the boys' pole vault clearing 11' 6". Tyler Machal ran a second place time of 5:11.3 in the 1600 meter run. Bryan Fregeau had a second place time of 2:17.2 in the 800 meter run. Paul Stark was second in the 3200 meter run in a time of 11:28.2.
The Vikings' 4x400 meter relay team of Clint Hayes, Sam Riggs, Taylor Ayres, and Justin Beshore ran a second place time of 3:41.0.
Bree Renner cleared 4' 9" to place third in the girls' high jump. Josie Riggs was third in the pole vault by clearing 7' 6". Kelsey Weis ran a third place time of 2:38.1 in the 800 meter run.
The Lady Vikes' 4x200 meter relay team of Shelby Garrigus, Bree Renner, Kayla Robinson, and Shannon Carver ran a third place time of 1:58.3. The 4x400 meter relay team of Kayla Robinson, Bree Renner, Lesli Wright, and Hannah Mills ran a third place time of 4:40.0.
Dylan Beshore was third in the boys' long jump with a mark of 18' 7 ½". Clint Hayes ran a third place time of 43.6 seconds in the 300 meter intermediate hurdles. Christopher Zoog was third in the 3200 meter run in a time of 11:43.2.
The Vikings' 4x800 meter relay team of Tyler Machal, Jacob Damron, Paul Stark, and Bryan Fregeau ran a third place time of 9:21.6. The 4x100 meter relay team of Dylan Beshore, Taylor Ayres, Zach Goddard, and Adrian Carder ran a third place time of 48.8 seconds.
Victoria Bynum clocked a fourth place time of 19.7 seconds in the girls' 100 meter high hurdles.
Tyler Yahnig cleared 10' 0" to place fourth in the boys' pole vault. Zach Goddard had a fourth place mark of 18' 7 ¼" in the long jump.
Shelby Jurgeson was fifth in the girls' 100 meter high hurdles in a time of 20.7 seconds. Josie Riggs ran a fifth place time of 6:24.0 in the 1600 meter run.
Christian Carl was fifth in the boys' shot put event with a heave of 38' 4". Clint Hayes ran a fifth place time of 24.8 seconds in the 200 meter dash.
Jennifer Gorsage was sixth in the girls' discus with a toss of 74' 6". Leigh Anne Stark was sixth in the 400 meter dash in a time of 1:10.2, and Leigh Anne ran a sixth place time of 15:11.9 in the 3200 meter run. Victoria Bynum was sixth in the 300 meter low hurdles in a time of 58.1 seconds.
Tesa Renner had an eighth place mark of 69' 4" in the girls' discus, and Tesa was eighth in the shot put with a mark of 26' 6". Shelby Jurgeson was eighth in the 300 meter low hurdles in a time of 1:09.1.
Taylor Ayres tied for eighth place in the boys' high jump by clearing 5' 2". Adrian Carder was eighth in the 110 meter high hurdles in a time of 20.3 seconds. Jacob Damron was eighth in the 1600 meter run in a time of 5:48.3, and Dalton Driggs ran an eighth place time of 2:27.4 in the 800 meter run.
"We had a great day individually and corporately," said Lady Viking head coach Bryan Stahl. "I'm very pleased with what we did Saturday, and I see great possibilities for this weekend at Springfield."
Midway boys' head coach Doug Carder echoed Coach Stahl's sentiments. "We performed about as well as we could possibly perform at districts," said Coach Carder. "All of the individual and relays qualifying to sectionals is awesome, and the team titles are just icing on a big district cake."
The sectional meet at JFK Stadium in Springfield gets underway at noon.
