The 2009 track & field season drew to a close for the Cass Midway Vikings last weekend. The Vikes and Lady Vikes participated in the MSHSAA Class 1 State Championship Meet on May 22 and 23. The championship meet was held at Dwight T. Reed Stadium on the campus of Lincoln University in Jefferson City.


The Lady Vikes scored 26 points to finish eighth as a team. The Vikings scored 13 points to finish in a tie for fifteenth place. Fifty-seven teams scored in the girls' Class 1 division. Fifty-one teams scored in the Class 1 boys' division.


The top eight individuals in each event and the top eight placing teams in each relay event earn all-state honors.


Shannon Carver placed third in the girls' pole vault by clearing 9' 0". Mackenzie Weis ran a third place time of 11:55.86 in the 3200 meter run.


Justin Beshore placed third in the boys' 300 meter intermediate hurdles in a time of 41.97 seconds.


Shelby Garrigus was fifth in the girls' triple jump with a mark of 33' 9", and Shelby was fifth in the long jump leaping 15' 2".


Sam Riggs soared to a fifth place finish in the boys' pole vault by clearing 12' 6".


Mackenzie Weis was sixth in the girls' 1600 meter run in a time of 5:40.22.


Justin Beshore ran a seventh place time of 16.67 seconds in the boys' 110 meter hurdle final.


Shannon Carver was seventh in the girls' shot put event with a put of 33' 10 ¼".


The Lady Vikes' 4x800 meter relay team of Kelsey Weis, Mackenzie Weis, Josie Riggs, and Kayla Robinson ran an eighth place time of 10:29.22.


The Vikes' 4x200 meter relay team qualified to finals by running 1:35.93, but the quartet of Justin Beshore, Sam Riggs, Zach Goddard, and Clint Hayes finished eighth in the finals in a time of 1:37.39.


The Lady Vikes' 4x200 meter relay team on Bree Renner, Shannon Carver, Shelby Garrigus and Kayla Robinson ran an eleventh place time of 1:56.83.


The Lady Vikes' 4x100 meter relay team of Lesli Wright, Shannon Carver, Bree Renner, and Shelby Garrigus ran a twelfth place time of  55.57 seconds.


The Vikes' 4x400 meter relay team ran into a bit of bad fortune in the exchange zone and had to settle for a twelfth place finish of 3:44.09. The 4x400 relay team members were Clint Hayes, Sam Riggs, Taylor Ayres, and Justin Beshore.


Hannah Mills had a thirteenth place time of 1:05.72 in the girls' 400 meter dash. Kayla Robinson was thirteenth in the 800 meter run in a time of 2:34.92.


The Lady Vikes' 4x400 meter relay team of Hannah Mills, Kayla Robinson, Bree Renner, and Lesli Wright ran a thirteenth place time of 4:34.18.


The Vikes' 4x800 meter relay team of Bryan Fregeau, Tyler Machal, Paul Stark, and Clint Hayes ran a thirteenth place time of 9:09.03.


Paul Stark ran a fourteenth place time of 11:26.87 in the boys' 3200 meter run.


Hannah Mills had a sixteenth place mark of 29' 6 ¼" in the girls' triple jump.


Zach Goddard was sixteenth in the boys' triple jump with a mark of 36' 7".


"We had a good weekend," said Lady Viking head coach Bryan Stahl. "We didn't quite meet our expectations as a team, but it wasn't from lack of effort."


Midway head boy's coach Doug Carder said, "Our guys competed really well. This year's team was a pairing of lots of young guys with quality senior leadership. The seniors did their part, and the younger guys listened and learned. It was a good season."
