MEET RECORD; BUT WIN STREAK ENDS
October 17, 2009 Cass Midway High School
Saturday, October 17 the Midway cross country Vikes and Lady Vikes raced at the West Platte Invitational, a meet Midway head coach Doug Carder had described as a "state quality tester." Coach Carder's words proved to be prophetic.
Midway's Lady Vikings saw their eight meet winning streak come to a close as Grain Valley won the varsity girls' division with a team score of 60. Lawson was second with a team score of 64. Five-time defending Class 1 state champion Hamilton: Penney was third with a team score of 68 and the Lady Vikes placed fourth with a team score of 73.
"This was a tough meet," said Coach Doug Carder. "Three of the four Class 1 girls' teams that got state trophies last year raced at West Platte on Saturday, and none of those teams placed higher than third. When you add a good Class 3 team like Grain Valley and a fine Class 2 team like Lawson to the mix things get even more difficult."
One Midway streak remained alive as Mackenzie Weis won her ninth consecutive race in a meet record time of 20:01 on the 5000 meter course at Platte Ridge Park. Kayla Robinson was fourteenth in a time of 22:41, and Sabrina Willey ran a seventeenth place time of 22:50.
Josie Riggs was twenty-fifth in a time of 23:27. Victoria Bynum was thirty-third in a time of 24:04. Caitlin Chaffin was forty-second in a time 25:48. Leigh Anne Stark was forty-eighth in a time of 27:03.
Midway got a twelfth place finish from Allie Hayes in the JV girls' race in a time of 26:53. Zoe Eberle was twenty-first in a time of 31:05.
Grain Valley won the varsity boys' division with a team score of 50. West Platte was second with a team score of 56. St. Pius X was third with a team score of 85. Midway's boys all raced in the JV division.
Paden Forester was eighth in the JV boys' race in a time of 22:05. Roy Spurgeon was ninth in a time of 22:07. Cameron Willey was thirteenth in a time of 23:30.
Hank Chrisman ran a fourteenth place time of 23:36. Justin Fielder was sixteenth in a time of 24:01. Bailey Scholl was twenty-fifth in a time of 28:22.
Midway will wrap up the regular season by racing in the Lakeland Invitational on Thursday, October 22.
