The Cass Midway football Vikings faced the University Academy Charter Gryphons at Midway on Friday, October 23 in the second round of district play. Midway was unable to find an answer for UAC's Darrenn White, and the Gryphons defeated the Vikings 28-16.
Darrenn White scored his first touchdown at 5:16 of the first quarter on a 9 yard run. The point after kick failed, but the Gryphons led the Vikings 6-0.
At 6:32 of the second quarter, Darrenn White scored his second touchdown on a 7 yard run. The Gryphons passed for two, unsuccessfully, leaving the score University Academy 12 and Midway 0. This score held up through halftime.
Midway got on the board at 5:16 of the third quarter on a 6 yard touchdown pass from Taylor Ayres to Zach Goddard. Bryan Fregeau passed to Cody Foreman for the two point conversion making the score Gryphons 12 and Vikings 8.
The Vikings took a short-lived lead at 11:56 of the fourth quarter. Beau Bollinger ran the ball in for a 1 yard touchdown. Taylor Ayres tossed a two-point conversion pass to Zach Goddard, and Midway moved in front of University Academy 16-12.
However, on the Gryphon's first play from scrimmage following the kickoff, Darrenn White raced through the Viking defense for a 70 yard touchdown. Darrenn White ran in the two-point conversion giving the Gryphons a 20-16 lead over the Vikings with 11:34 to play in the game.
Darrenn White ran 18 yards for his fourth touchdown of the game at 2:17 of the fourth quarter. Darrenn White then tossed a two-point conversion pass to Joshua Wilson to cap University Academy's 28-16 victory over Cass Midway.
"We just couldn't contain him (Darrenn White)," said Midway head coach Larry Burchett. "We put ourselves in a position to win, but we just couldn't keep Darrenn White in check. He's a good player."
Darrenn White ran the ball 33 times for 192 yards and completed 10 of his 17 passes for 145 yards.
Midway's leading rusher was Beau Bollinger with 64 yards on 14 carries. Cody Foreman ran the ball 13 times for 45 yards.
Taylor Ayres was 6 of 17 passing the football for 39 yards. Zach Goddard had 3 catches for 16 yards. Cody Foreman had 2 catches for 10 yards. Josh Fischer had 1 catch for 10 yards. Bryan Fregeau caught a 4 yard pass and tossed a two-point conversion pass.
Cody Foreman averaged 49 yards per punt on 3 punts, and he averaged 38.3 yards per kick on 3 kickoffs. Cody returned 1 kickoff 16 yards. Bryan Fregeau had a 13 yard kickoff return. Zach Goddard returned 3 kickoffs a total of 37 yards.
Ryan Minta had 6 solo tackles, 6 assisted tackles, and a fumble recovery to lead the Viking defense. Cody Foreman had 4 unassisted tackles and 4 assists. Josh Hague had 4 solo tackles and 3 assists. Taylor Ayres had 4 unassisted tackles and 2 assisted tackles.
Garrett James had 3 solo tackles and 2 assists. Beau Bollinger had 3 unassisted tackles. Zach Goddard had 2 solo tackles and 1 assist. Dilan Worthley had 2 unassisted tackles.
Michael Lading had 1 solo tackle and 1 assist. Kylen Roberson had 3 assists. Josh Fischer had 1 unassisted tackle. Tyler Johnston assisted on 1 tackle.
The Vikings will face the Lone Jack Mules at 7:00 PM on Friday, October 30. The winner moves on into the playoffs. The losing team stays home. Lone Jack defeated Crest Ridge 34-15 on October 23. The Vikings and Mules are both 1-1 in district play.
"We knew from the start of the season that our opportunity to make the playoffs would go through Lone Jack." said Coach Burchett. "Our playoff destiny is in our own hands. It's put-up or shut-up time."
The UAC game marked senior night for Midway seniors Michael Kraemer, Cody Foeman, Josh Fischer, Beau Bollinger, Alex Weber, Tyler Johnston, Kylen Roberson, Michael Lading, and Garrett James.
